A man has been killed after allegedly being struck with a sharp sickle by his elder brother following an altercation over land boundaries in Kushtia's Daulatpur Upazila.
The incident took place around 7:30pm on Sunday in Shehala Badaltala village of Boalia Union, near the Indian border, said Daulatpur Police chief Khaledur Rahman.
The dead has been identified as Imdadul Haque Badal, 52, a local farmer of the village.
According to witnesses, the two brothers had been involved in a longstanding dispute over the demarcation of a road passing through their ancestral land.
On Sunday evening, an argument broke out between the brothers over the issue. At one point, the elder brother, Bazlur Rahman, allegedly attacked Imdadul with a sharp sickle.
Imdadul suffered serious injuries in the attack. Family members and local residents rescued him in critical condition and headed towards hospital, but he died on the way.
The incident sparked tensions in the area.
Police went to the scene after the incident was reported and recovered Imdadul's body.
“We initially suspect that the killing took place following a dispute between the two brothers over land,” officer Khaledur said.
The body will be sent to Kushtia General Hospital on Monday morning for a postmortem examination.
Police are questioning Bazlur on suspicion of involvement in the killing, the officer said.
