Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is standing by the daughter of a truck driver who was beaten to death after a “rumour spread” that he was involved in a truck accident in Faridpur’s Nagarkanda.
SM Rakibul Hasain, the executive officer (UNO) for Boalmari Upazila, made the remark on Tuesday morning during a visit to the home of the truck driver’s parents at Satoir village.
Hannan Sheikh, 35, was the son of village residents Shahid Sheikh and Nargis Begum. He was also the father of a 2-year-old girl.
On May 1, an allegation spread that Hannan’s truck had rammed several pedestrians in the Bilnalia area of Talma Union in Nagarkanda.
At one point, locals blocked the road, stopped the truck, pulled Hannan from it and beat him indiscriminately. He was critically injured and taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead.
The family says Hannan was their sole income earner. His two-year-old daughter Moslema lived with her paternal grandparents after Hannan separated from his wife.
UNO Rakibul said, “Truck driver Hannan’s death and the situation faced by his family came to the notice of higher-ups in government when it was reported in the media.”
“Then instructions came down from the Prime Minister’s Office to arrange for the care and rearing of Hannan’s orphaned daughter. As part of that, I have come here today to make inquiries and provide some initial support as well.”
He presented the child’s grandparents with some toys, cash, and food items.
Local union council Chairman Rafiul Alam Mintu also assured the family that the local authorities would provide regular support for the child.
