The Border Security Force (BSF) of India has detained a young man from the Darshana border in Damurhuda Upazila of Chuadanga, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) says.
The incident took place in the border area adjacent to the Darshana-Gede international checkpost on Saturday, said Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan, commander of Chuadanga-6 BGB Battalion.
The detainee, Zulfiqar Ali, 22, hailed from Joynagar village of the Upazila, and worked at the Ramnagar biscuit factory in Darshana municipality.
BGB and locals said that Zulfiqar went to collect firewood in the border area with some friends in the afternoon. At that time, members of the BSF camp in Gede chased and detained him.
Although two to three others with him managed to escape, locals alleged that Zulfiqar was beaten by BSF members and taken away.
Lt Col Hasan said, “Zulfiqar was trying to cut the security fence on the Indian side of the Darshana-Gede border railway line. The BSF detained him at the time and later handed him over to the Indian police.”
The BGB officer said they were contacting the BSF over the matter.
