A Dhaka court has denied bail to a man who was arrested for allegedly trying to enter the security perimeter designated for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who had come to Farmgate to attend an event.
Following a hearing on Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam rejected the bail petition filed by the accused, Mahibullah Mubin.
Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the Prosecution Department confirmed the matter.
Mubin was arrested by Tejgaon Police on Sept 5 under a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
He was produced before the court the following day with a seven-day remand petition. The court sent the accused to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Sept 7.
On that day, the court granted five days to question Mubin in police custody. After the remand period ended, he was sent to jail on Saturday.
On Monday, the scheduled date for the bail hearing, Mubin was brought before the court. His lawyer, Robiul Alam Jewel, petitioned for his bail.
The lawyer said, “The accused is completely innocent. He had no intention of carrying out any act of sabotage. He went there out of emotion with the intention of taking a selfie with the prime minister.”
“No information was obtained from him during the remand interrogation. We are seeking bail under whatever conditions necessary.”
The prosecution opposed Mubin’s bail petition. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court sent him to jail.
On the day of the incident, Tarique was on his way to an event at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium, organised to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The prime minister’s motorcade arrived at the venue from his office via Bijoy Sarani and the Aircraft Crossing.
After the prime minister’s motorcade entered the venue, the biker allegedly tried to enter the left lane from the intersection. A sergeant on duty at the scene stopped him and handed him over to police.
Tejgaon Police subsequently took the young man into custody along with his motorcycle.
