Even after 55 years of independence, it has not been possible to compile a complete list of martyrs and victims of genocide in the Liberation War, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan has said in parliament.
He said the government has now taken the initiative to compile a complete list of martyrs in the Liberation War. Once the initiative is implemented, it will be possible to compile an "accurate and acceptable" list of genocide victims and all martyrs.
He made the remarks in response to a question from Pirojpur 3 MP Ruhul Amin Dulal during the question and answer session of the parliament chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Wednesday.
The minister said that the number of martyred freedom fighters listed in the gazette of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs currently stands at 6,480.
This list includes 3,698 martyred civilians, 1,541 martyred armed forces members, 817 martyred BGB members, 423 martyred police members, and one martyred Ansar member.
Azam Khan said that if a complete list of martyrs is prepared, it will be possible to give their sacrifices the proper recognition and respect. In response to a question from BNP MP Abul Kalam, the minister for Liberation War affairs said, "On the recommendation of the Freedom Fighters Council, the gazette, Lal Muktibarta or Indian enlistment of 6,476 people have been cancelled since 2010."
He said that of these, 481 names have been cancelled since August 2024.
