The United Nations has pledged to assist Bangladesh in the general election scheduled for February.
On Thursday, UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis met with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, where she gave the assurance.
The Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO) later issued a media statement outlining the discussions.
Lewis praised the close cooperation between the UN and the interim government, with both sides holding wide-ranging talks on Bangladesh’s development priorities and reform agenda.
According to the statement, a central topic of discussion was the upcoming national elections. Lewis reaffirmed the UN’s ongoing commitment to support the Election Commission in conducting the February polls.
“The UN fully supports the February general election. It is crucial for the country’s democratic transition,” she said.
They discussed ways the UN could assist in ensuring a transparent, free, fair, and peaceful electoral process, the CAO said.
In addition, both sides explored avenues for expanded UN support to advance the interim government’s “ambitious” reform initiatives.
Preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York and the Rohingya conference later this month were also reviewed during the meeting.
The statement noted that both sides expressed serious concern over the sharp decline in international funding for Rohingya humanitarian efforts, which has already begun to affect education and other critical services in the camps.
Yunus, as per the statement, underscored the urgent need for sustained global solidarity and increased international cooperation to close the funding gap and reinforce Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts for the displaced population.
Lewis, according to the press note, reiterated the UN’s steadfast support for Bangladesh’s reform and transition process, emphasising the organisation’s commitment to helping the country achieve sustainable development and long-term prosperity.
