A man has been accused of entering a teenage girl’s room in Meherpur town late at night and severing her right hand from her body with a sharp weapon. He is also alleged to have injured her mother and father with the sharp weapon.
The incident occurred around 2am on Wednesday, according to Humayun Kabir, chief of Meherpur Sadar Police Station.
The 17-year-old girl has been identified as the daughter of local businessman Selim Hossain.
The suspected perpetrator is 24-year-old Shayon, the son of Abu Taleb, who owns a hotel in Mollikpara.
The injured were initially taken to Meherpur General Hospital for emergency treatment. They were later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to excessive blood loss and a deterioration in their physical condition, according to police and locals.
The girl’s father Selim said his daughter is an SSC examinee. Shayon would regularly harass her when he saw her outside, he said.
When she told her father of the situation, he went and complained to Shayon’s father. Despite this, Shayon continued to make romantic proposals and threats against her.
Selim said, “Around 2am on Wednesday, Shayon climbed over the border wall and entered my daughter’s room. Then, using a sharp weapon, he hacked at her right hand and severed it from her body. My daughter screamed out and everyone immediately rushed in. Shayon attacked and injured us with a sharp blade used to cut open coconuts and fled. Locals noticed the incident, rescued us, rushed us to the hospital and informed the police station.”
The girl’s mother Rebecca Khatun said she rushed in after hearing her daughter’s screams and saw that her right hand had been cut off and was lying on the floor while her daughter writhed on the ground.
A neighbour, Barkat Ullah Taru, said he went to the scene late at night upon hearing screams and saw a man fleeing. He entered the room to see the girl on the floor, with her severed hand next to her. The sharp blade used in the attack was also lying next to them. He also saw the girl’s parents running about while bleeding.
He said the injured were first taken to Meherpur General Hospital where the victims were given emergency treatment to staunch the bleeding. When their conditions deteriorated, they were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Meherpur Sadar Police Station chief Humayun said, “Police are inspecting the scene after the incident was reported. We have received statements from the injured in the hospital and have recovered the blade used in the attack.”
“Moreover, several police teams have been conducting operations since last night to arrest Shayon. He will be brought to book soon.”
