A train carriage has derailed in Sirajganj, snapping rail links between Dhaka and the north of Bangladesh.
The incident occurred at Shaheed M Mansur Ali Railway Station on the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge around 10:55am on Tuesday, according to Hafizur Rahman, booking assistant at the station.
No casualties have been reported in the incident.
Hafizur said, “A carriage suddenly derailed after the Dhaka-bound ‘Silkcity’ train from Rajshahi arrived at the station. Rail connectivity between Dhaka to the northern region has been suspended since the incident.”
The Nilphamari-bound “Nilsagar Express” from Dhaka is stuck at Sayedabad Railway Station on the western side of the Jamuna Bridge due to the derailing.
Asked about the situation, Sirajganj Railway Deputy Assistant Engineer Ahsanur Rahman said, “We have submitted a report for the rescue train to come from Pabna’s Ishurdi. It will be possible to restore the line once the rescue train arrives.”
The train has already departed, he said.
