Former education minister Dipu Moni, who is in custody, has been released on 12-hour parole to attend the funeral of her husband, Supreme Court lawyer Tawfique Nawaz.
She was taken from Munshiganj Jail to Dhaka in a van under tight police security at 6:15am on Thursday.
Kalabagan Police chief Fazle Ashik told bdnews24.com around 9am that Dipu Moni had reached her home in Kalabagan at 8:20am under tight security.
"She is there now. We have arranged adequate security," he said.
Dipu Moni's lawyer Gazi Foysal Islam said they had applied for four days of parole.
However, the district magistrate granted her parole for 12 hours during daylight hours.
Earlier, Munshiganj District Magistrate Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi granted Dipu Moni 12 hours of parole, effective from 6am to 6pm.
During the parole period, she will be allowed to see her late husband's body and attend his burial.
According to a family decision, the body of the late Tawfique will be taken to his home in Kalabagan on Thursday morning.
It will then be taken to the Gulshan Azad Mosque, where the funeral prayer will be held after Zuhr prayers. He will subsequently be buried at Banani graveyard.
Dipu Moni will have to return to jail by 6pm, within the stipulated parole period, her lawyer Foysal said.
Tawfique, 76, died at Continental Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night after long-term complications from kidney and liver disease.
A Supreme Court lawyer by profession, he also practised classical music and had suffered a stroke in 2019.
He was last seen in public on May 27, when relatives brought him to court in a wheelchair to see his incarcerated wife.
Dipu Moni has been in custody since her arrest in multiple cases following the July 2024 Uprising that toppled the Awami League government.
Although she has secured bail in several cases at the High Court, she remains detained because of other pending charges in Dhaka and Munshiganj.
Her daughter had previously sought seven days of parole for Dipu Moni in May, citing Tawfique’s illness, but the request was not granted.
