Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-306 from Toronto, Canada has finally arrived in Dhaka after being stranded for nearly 40 hours at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport due to a technical fault.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines Public Relations Officer Boshra Islam said, "Alhamdulillah, the Rome flight safely landed at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport at 12:30pm."
The flight had departed Rome for Bangladesh at 11pm local time on Saturday.
Carrying more than 250 passengers, the aircraft departed Toronto Pearson International Airport at 5:18pm local time on Thursday.
After flying for eight hours, it developed a technical problem and made an emergency landing at Fiumicino Airport at 7:19am local time on Friday.
When efforts to fix the problem failed, Biman flew spare parts and a two-member engineering team from Dhaka to Rome.
The engineers left Dhaka for Rome on Biman flight BG-305 on Saturday afternoon. The flight landed in Rome at 7:16pm local time, according to Bangladesh time.
After the technical problem was fixed, the aircraft was declared fit for operation and the flight was cleared to depart that night.
The incident caused sufferings for more than 250 passengers on board.
Passengers complained that at least 170 Bangladeshi passport holders had to spend the entire 40-hour period sitting in the airport lounge.
Biman arranged hotel accommodation only for the remaining passengers, who held Canadian and US passports.
