Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has insisted that the next general election will be held on the date announced by the chief advisor, despite objections from some political parties.
On Saturday, Jahangir said: “The election will be held in the month [February] the chief advisor has said. We don’t need to listen to who is saying what.”
He added that no political force could prevent the polls.
“When the people are ready for an election, nobody can stop it. The authority of the state lies with the people.”
His comments came after Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), said earlier this month that the general election, scheduled for February next year, would not take place.
Jahangir, who also oversees the agriculture ministry, was visiting a kitchen market in Mohammadpur, where he also addressed rising food prices.
He said heavy rainfall and flooding had driven up vegetable costs but noted that potato prices had remained stable due to large reserves in cold storage.
The advisor declined to comment on a viral video linking another government advisor, Asif Mohammad Shojib Bhuyain, to an extortion case involving the home of a former MP.
He said only that “any incident under the jurisdiction of the home ministry will immediately be brought under the law.”
