A committee has begun investigating allegations that a former prosecutor at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) had demanded bribes in exchange for bail in a case of crimes against humanity related to the July Uprising.
ICT Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam told reporters about the development at his office on Wednesday.
He is leading the five-member fact-finding panel formed on Tuesday to look into allegations of bribery against former prosecutor Saimum Reza Talukder.
Aminul said: "A question has been raised before us, or an allegation has come, which we do not view lightly.
“Simultaneously, in case there’s any other allegation in this tribunal, we’ve formed a committee under my leadership to uncover detailed information on all these issues.”
Four of the members started the work as the fifth was absent due to illness.
The chief prosecutor further said: "The main purpose of our fact-finding committee is to uncover information on whether any member of our prosecution team or any individuals responsible are involved in any unethical activities.
"If any substantive allegations are found, we will take appropriate legal action against those involved," he warned.
The committee was formed on Tuesday following a news report that featured what it claimed was leaked audio of former prosecutor Saimum demanding bribes from a suspect to secure him bail in an ICT case.
In the audio conversation, the accused was heard demanding the bribes from Chattogram ex-MP ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, who is currently in jail in a case over crimes against humanity.
As the report came to light on Tuesday morning, the chief prosecutor warned his team against corruption, stating that he will not tolerate any such practices and would take stricter measures immediately.
