Actor Niamot Ullah Bhuian, popularly known as Zaher Alvi, has surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail in a case filed over the suicide of his wife.
His lawyer Sheikh Robayet Islam submitted the surrender and bail petition before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin on Thursday.
State counsel Harun Ur Rashid confirmed the development, adding that the court will hear the bail matter at 1:30pm.
Family members found Alvi’s wife Afra Ibnat Ikra hanging at the couple's Mirpur DOHS flat on Feb 28 and rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where she was declared dead.
Police later visited the hospital, prepared an inquest report and collected evidence from the residence.
Ikra's father Kabir Hayat Khan filed the case on the day of the incident, alleging that prolonged family disputes and different forms of abuse had driven his daughter to take her own life.
In his bail petition, Alvi said he had no involvement in the incident and that his wife had died by suicide.
The petition also said the couple have a young son and that Alvi is the family's sole breadwinner.
He sought bail either unconditionally or on any terms set by the court.
Earlier on Jun 4, Alvi’s mother Nasrin Sultana surrendered before the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah and secured bail in connection with the same case.
Alvi was abroad when his wife died. His lawyers later moved the High Court seeking protection from arrest or harassment upon his return to Bangladesh.
The court ruled in his favour, and Alvi returned home on Jun 5 following the order.
