DMP chief expects to submit chargesheet in DU student Shammo's murder within a week

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali has said the investigation into the murder of Dhaka University Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo will be completed within a week and the chargesheet will be sent to a special tribunal for the exemplary punishment to the culprits.

Speaking to journalists following a discussion with DU Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan at his office at 6pm on Saturday, he said: “Probe is a complex task. We expect to unravel the cause of the incident within a week. Then we will take all measures to ensure maximum penalty by sending the chargesheet to the special tribunal for trial of the crime at the earliest.

"You have seen an example of speedy justice [on Saturday]. Capital punishment has been given after a speedy inquiry and trial in the rape and murder case of Magura child.”

Referring to the killing of Shammo, he said: “The incident occurred late at night. Those involved were injured. We have taken them into custody from several hospitals. The court placed them on remand.”

Police will give a complete briefing after wrapping up the pending work within the next seven days, he added.

The DMP chief said, "We have no complacency and have come a long way. But I can't say much right now for the sake of the investigation.”

DMP's Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Md Masud Alam said, "We have held three suspects immediately. We didn't get them ready. Since they were injured, we conducted a search at several hospitals and found one at Samorita Hospital and the other at BRB Hospital.

“We got to know from them that another suspect was with them and he was caught by tracking his mobile phone. Since there was a fear of a mob attack on them, we took them to the DB office and arranged treatment there.”

He added, "We’re not just sitting with these three suspects and working from all angles. We are deeply looking into the matter based on CCTV footage from multiple places and information from those arrested when we will get them on remand [on Sunday].”
