Another child with measles symptoms has died in the past 24 hours while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

The child died around 11pm on Wednesday, said Associate Professor Golam Mowla of the Children's Ward.

The deceased boy was 10 months old. The infant was a resident of the district’s Trishal Upazila and was admitted to the hospital on Apr 18 with measles-like symptoms.

Hospital authorities said that a total of 748 children were admitted with measles symptoms from Mar 17 until Thursday morning. Of these, 667 have been discharged from the hospital. Sixteen children have died.

Over the last 24 hours, 27 new children have been admitted with measles-like symptoms. During this same period, a total of 47 children have recovered and been discharged from the hospital, while 65 children are still undergoing treatment in the isolation ward.

Associate Prof Mowla said, “The reason for the increase in measles this time is the lack of vaccination under the previous government. As a result, children are being infected at a higher rate.”

He also said, “The number of measles infection cases is surging because children have low immunity. One of the causes of death is the delay in bringing infected children to the hospital.”
