Arms recovered after UPDF members exchange fire with Army in Khagrachhari, says ISPR

The armed group managed to escape because of the remoteness of the area, ISPR says

The Bangladesh Army has recovered firearms and ammunition following a shootout with members of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in the Panchari Upazila of Khagrachhari.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the incident took place on Saturday morning.

“The Army has been conducting a long-term operation against armed groups in the hill areas.

“As part of this, a patrol team was searching the house of a suspected active member of the UPDF (main) team when they came under fire from about 15 to 20 UPDF members stationed in the village.”

Later, Army personnel scanned the area and recovered eight rounds of ammunition, one Russian pistol, two magazines, 200 rounds of rifle ammunition, a walkie-talkie set, along with uniforms and other accessories.

“The armed group was able to escape due to the remoteness of the area,” ISPR added.

Highlighting that a case is being filed against the UPDF members involved in the incident, the ISPR said the Army remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all ethnic groups in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and that strict military operations against armed groups will continue.
