Police have arrested five people, including Belal Hossain - a convict who was broken out of custody during an attack on Patgram Police Station in Lalmonirhat.

The arrests were made during raids conducted across Patgram Upazila on Saturday, said Saad Ahmed, chief of Lalmonirhat police's Detective Branch.

The other arrestees are Zulfikar Ali, 23, Khairul Islam, 38, Mizanur Rahman, 33, and Lazu, 30.

“Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a raid and apprehended Belal Hossain, a convict who had been sentenced to one month in jail by a mobile court. He was forcibly taken away after an attack on the police station,” said Saad.

“Earlier, another convict named Sohel Rana, who was also snatched away in the same case, was arrested.”

Meanwhile, police allege that during the incident, an attempt was made to prevent officers from Hatibandha Police Station from reaching Patgram by surrounding the station and blocking roads.

Two people, including Nurunnabi Kajol, the convener of the Hatibandha Upazila unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal, were arrested in connection with a separate case filed over the incident, according to the police. Kajol was later expelled from the organisation.

So far, a total of 14 people have been arrested in the two cases filed with the Patgram and Hatibandha police stations.

“Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing,” said Saad.
