The Election Commission (EC) led by AMM Nasir Uddin is set to meet with the president on Dec 10 before announcing the schedule for the upcoming parliamentary election and the referendum.
Sharing the decision with bdnews24.com on Thursday, an election commissioner said: "The election schedule may be announced within a day or two of the meeting."
The EC had previously said the schedule for organising the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum in February would be announced in the second week of December. Before that, the commission has a meeting on Dec 7 over the schedule.
As per tradition, the schedule will be finalised after meeting with the president this time as well.
When asked, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud told bdnews24.com that the latest amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) has also been approved. All necessary preparations have been completed.
Meanwhile, the registration of two more new political parties is also in the final stages.
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker said, "The decision on the schedule's timeline will be made in the commission meeting. It will be finalised after the meeting with the president."
He told bdnews24.com, "We have been saying that the schedule will be in the second week of December. In that case, it will be any day starting from Dec 8. And the voting date will also be around the second week of February. Counting two months from the schedule will give a specific date."
He added that after reviewing the dates for the schedule in the commission meeting and completing certain formalities, the chief election commissioner will announce it in an address to the nation on the designated day.
There are also plans to extend the voting time by one hour for the general election.
EC officials said voting day is usually fixed after considering the weekend. In that case, the first working day of the week, Sunday, or the last working day, Thursday, is chosen.
Based on past experience, the EC Secretariat will propose multiple dates this time as well, and the commission will finalise it.
Previously, voting for the 6th parliamentary election was held in February. The polling day for that election, Feb 15, 1996, was a Thursday. The gap between the schedule announcement and the polling day was 55 days.
