A Chattogram court has placed former Raozan lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury on a three-day remand in a case over the killing of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Nurul Alam Nuru in the city nearly eight years ago.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ibrahim Khalil issued the remand order on Monday.

Currently in jail, Karim participated in the court proceedings virtually.

“The investigating officer had sought a five-day remand. The court granted three days,” said Riyad Uddin, assistant public prosecutor of the Chattogram Metropolitan Court.

CID Inspector Nasir Uddin Russell is investigating the case and had filed the remand petition on Sunday.

Nuru was a joint general secretary of the central committee of the JCD. His family is from Chandanpur of Chattogram city.

People identifying themselves as police personnel had picked up Nuru from his home around midnight on Mar 29, 2017, his relatives claimed.

His body was found the next day around noon on the bank of the Karnaphuli River in Raozan’s Bagoan.

After the fall of the Awami League government in a student-led uprising, Nuru’s wife, Sumi Akter, filed a case over the murder with Chawkbazar Police Station on Sept 1 last year.

Karim was named as the prime accused in the case. The second accused in the case is Jabed, identified with a single name, who was the sub-inspector of the Noapara Police Outpost. There are 15 named and 40 other unnamed suspects in the case.

Sumi said Nuru was picked up by the suspects, led by Jabed, at the order of Karim, before being taken to the Noapara Degree College ground and tortured there, with him bound, gagged, and blindfolded.

Nuru was shot in the head and killed, Sumi alleged. His body was eventually dumped where it was found.

Once involved in NDP politics, Karim joined the AL in 1996 and secured the party’s nomination for parliament, though he lost that election despite the party coming to power.

He was first elected MP from Raozan in 2001. He remained an MP for five consecutive terms until 2024.

He went into hiding after AL’s fall on Aug 5 last year.

On Sept 12, the Border Guard Bangladesh detained Karim near the Akhaura border in Brahmanbaria. He has remained in prison since.

The media reported 10 cases were filed against Karim in multiple police stations in Chattogram over murder, abduction, extortion, attempted murder, framing people with weapons, forcing land transfers at gunpoint, vandalism, and illegal occupation. Courts have placed him on remand multiple times in different cases.
