Tahmina Zaman Sraboni, wife of former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, has also submitted her nomination papers for the Netrakona-4 constituency (comprising Mohangonj, Madan, and Khaliajuri).

She has entered the fray as an independent candidate, Netrakona Deputy Commissioner Saifur Rahman said on Monday.

Babar has submitted his nomination papers as the BNP candidate for this constituency, meaning both husband and wife have now filed to contest in the same seat.

Sraboni had previously contested in this constituency in 2018 and secured a significant number of votes.

This time, three female candidates are joining the election race in the constituency.

The other two are Communist Party of Bangladesh’s (CPB) Joly Talukder and Revolutionary Workers Party’s Champa Rani Sarkar.

Babar was first elected as a lawmaker for the Netrokona-4 constituency in 1991.

Although he lost to the Awami League's Abdul Momin in the following election, he was re-elected in 2001. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as the state minister for home affairs.

Babar also submitted his nomination papers at the District Collector’s Office on Monday.

When reporters questioned him over his wife filing her own nomination, Babar said:, “I cannot say anything about this matter at the moment.”
