The Shahjibazar Power Plant in Habiganj has caught fire, cutting off electricity across the entire district.

The building caught fire around 7:15pm on Thursday following a loud bang.

The fire was brought under control within half an hour by the Fire Service.

Two high-voltage circuit breakers at the plant have burned in the blaze.

Authorities are working to restore power through alternative ways, according to an official from the Power Development Board (PDB).

Manzur Morshed, executive engineer at the PDB's Habiganj office, said efforts are under way to restore electrical supply now that the fire is extinguished. He estimates it may take two to two and a half hours to complete the work.

Rakib Uddin Bhuiyan, station officer at Madhabpur Fire Service, said they suspect the fire is caused by an electrical fault during the rain.

Two transformers have been damaged in the blaze. A power outage hit the entire district immediately after the fire.

A similar incident occurred at the 330-megawatt power plant on May 29, 2022, when a fire destroyed three transformers and several other components.
