Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Rumeein Farhana has collected nomination papers for Brahmanbaria-2 to contest the parliamentary polls as an independent candidate.

The seat has been ceded by her party to its alliance partner Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh.

Sarail Upazila Jubo Dal’s former organising secretary Ali Hossain collected the nomination papers from the office of the Upazila administrator on behalf of the former BNP lawmaker Rumeen on Wednesday afternoon.

Several hundred activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations appeared in support of Rumeen during the purchase of her nomination papers.

Brahmanbaria-2 consists of parts of Sarail, Ashuganj, and Bijoynagar Upazilas. At least half a dozen other candidates are planning to contest in the election from the constituency.

On Tuesday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that the party would leave four seats for Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam as part of alliance arrangements.

He said the BNP would not field candidates in those four agreed constituencies.

In Brahmanbaria-2, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam has nominated its central committee Joint Secretary General Junaid Al Habib as its candidate.

Brahmanbaria-2 has a total of 499,448 voters, with 288,609 in nine unions of Sarail, 153,099 in eight unions of Ashuganj, and 57,740 in two unions of Bijoynagar.
