An Indian passenger has been caught smuggling capsule-shaped gold concealed in his underwear at Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said in a statement on Saturday that the passenger, identified as Thameem Ansari, had attempted to smuggle the gold using a novel method.
Ansari landed at the airport on Air Arabia flight G9-526 from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates at 6:58am that day.
A CIID team in Chattogram identified him after he crossed the airport's green channel.
A body search revealed capsule-shaped gold objects concealed inside his underwear using a special technique, the statement said.
The recovered items, including packaging material, weighed 455g.
The CIID said the actual gold content and purity were being determined with the help of a goldsmith, after excluding the packaging material.
The estimated value of the seized gold is around Tk 10 million, it added.
The directorate said legal action was being taken under customs law, alongside preparations to file a criminal case against the passenger.
It warned that intelligence surveillance and operations against gold and other smuggling through international airports would continue.
