A Dhaka court has shown journalist Shaukat Mahmood arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Shahbagh Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Monday.

Prosecutor Muhammad Shamshuddoha Suman confirmed the order was issued in presence of the former National Press Club president.

This is the same case in which former Awami League minister Abdul Latif Siddique and Dhaka University law professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon were previously detained.

According to the case statement, the incident took place on Aug 28, 2025, during a roundtable discussion organised by “Mancha 71” at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).

The programme was held to address alleged attempts to distort the history of the Liberation War.

A group of individuals reportedly stormed the venue, tore down banners and confined participants.

While most guests were escorted out, Latif Siddique and Hafizur Rahman remained besieged until police rescued them.

Both were initially arrested alongside 14 others, though they were later released on bail.

Shaukat has been in custody since Dec 6, 2025, when he was arrested in a separate case filed with Ramna Police.

That case involves allegations of a "conspiracy to oust the government," centred around Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin.

Although the High Court recently granted Shaukat bail in the Ramna case, the investigation officer DB Inspector Md Akhtar Morshed filed a petition on Mar 16 to show him arrested in the Shahbagh case.

Following Monday's hearing, the court ordered him to be sent back to jail under the new charges.
