Police have received another six days to question Momtaz Begum, popular singer and former MP for Manikganj-2, in connection with two separate murder and sabotage cases filed in Manikganj.

The order was delivered following the hearings for the two cases at the courts of Harirampur and Singair on Thursday morning, court police chief Abul Khayer said.

Following the hearings, as Momtaz was being taken to a prison van, an agitated crowd lobbed eggs and shoes at her within the court premises.

OC Khayer reported that Momtaz was brought to the Manikganj court from Kashimpur Central Jail around 8:30am.

At around 11am, Judge Aivy Akter of Manikganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court placed her on a two-day remand after the hearing in a sabotage case from Harirampur.

Besides, approximately at 11:30am, Momtaz was presented before Senior Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Abdun Nur’s court in a murder case from Singair, where the judge granted a four-day remand.

During the hearings, pro-BNP lawyers and activists held protests on court premises, demanding punishment for Momtaz.

OC Khayer further explained that the murder case was filed over a 2013 incident in Singair’s Gobindol, where four individuals were shot dead by police during a rally in support of a strike.

A decade later, on Oct 25, 2024, a relative of one of the deceased, Majnu Molla, initiated a murder case naming Momtaz as the key accused.

In October 2024, Harirampur Upazila BNP Organising Secretary Delwar Hossain filed another case with Harirampur police over allegations of attack, assault and vandalism in her electoral area.

Police detectives arrested Momtaz in Dhanmondi earlier on May 12.

She became a member of the 9th parliament in 2008 on Awami League’s nomination. She won under the boat symbol.

However, the singer lost to another Awami League leader who contested as an independent candidate in the 12th parliamentary election.

She was named in several cases filed over the deaths during the mass uprising.
