National Identity Card (NID) services have commenced for expatriate Bangladeshis in Japan.

The initiative was inaugurated on Friday at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo by Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

Akhtar said many Bangladeshi expatriates in Japan do not have national identity cards, which makes it difficult for them to access services back home.

“With the launch of NID services, Bangladeshis living in Japan will now be able to obtain NID-related services directly from the embassy. Arrangements are also being made so that expatriates can cast their votes in future elections through postal ballots,” he said.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan, Md Daud Ali, said: “With the launch of NID services in Japan, a longstanding demand of expatriate Bangladeshis here has been fulfilled.”

To obtain a national identity card, applicants must apply online at https://services.nidw.gov.bd and submit biometric data along with the required documents at the embassy.
