Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a mother and daughter in Ramganj Upazila of Lakshmipur.
District Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhtar Hossain told journalists on Friday that Parvez Hossain was detained from Dhaka’s Turag area on Thursday.
Police said 55-year-old Julekha Begum and her daughter Tania Akhter Meem, 19, were killed by slitting their throats on Oct 9.
Gold ornaments from the house were looted. On Oct 10, Julekha’s husband Mizanur Rahman filed a case against unknown persons.
At the press conference, Akhtar said Parvez is Mizanur’s nephew. He came to Lakshmipur from Saudi Arabia two months ago.
Facing financial difficulties, he decided to steal gold from his uncle's house.
On the afternoon of Oct 9, Parvez bought a knife and went to his uncle’s home with mangoes and apples. He killed Julekha and Meem by slitting their throats and fled with the gold.
Police recovered 72.88g from Parvez, and another 11.66g of gold, which had been sold at two shops in Lakshmipur, the SP said.
