Two people have been killed while another has been injured in a head-on collision between a speedboat and a cargo carrier on the Bemalia River in Nasirnagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The accident occurred around 10pm on Monday near Khagalia village in Bholakut Union, Nasirnagar, said Nasirnagar Police Station chief Md Shahinul Islam.
The dead were identified as Md Dayal Mia, from Chatlapar village in Chatlapar Union of the Upazila, and Sajeeb Mia, hailing from Bararchar village in Kuliarchar Upazila of Kishoreganj.
The injured victim is undergoing treatment at Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex. His name and identity could not immediately be confirmed.
Police and local residents said a speedboat was returning to Chatlapar after dropping off a patient at Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex. On its way, the speedboat collided head-on with a steel cargo vessel coming from the opposite direction on the Bemalia River.
All three people aboard the speedboat were seriously injured in the collision. Local residents rescued them and took them to Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors on duty declared Dayal and Sajeeb dead.
Shafiqul Islam, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex, said the two men were brought in dead. The other injured person was given first aid.
Officer Shahinul said police went to the hospital after receiving the news. Further details will be provided later.
