Ahead of the announcement of the election schedule, student advisors Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and Mahfuj Alam have tendered their resignations.
On Wednesday evening, the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed their resignations in a briefing at State Guest House Jamuna.
“The two advisors submitted their resignation letters at 5pm. Their resignations will take effect as soon as the Election Commission announces the schedule.”
Asif Mahmud had been serving as an advisor to the local government, rural development and co-operatives divisions alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Mahfuj was an advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Amid speculation over their resignations, Asif addressed a press conference at noon, presenting a detailed account of his work during his tenure.
On his plans, he said: “I have already said I intend to contest in the elections, though I have not yet decided from which constituency.”
When asked about whether he had resigned or submitted his resignation, he said: “I am not authorised to comment on this. The Chief Advisor’s Office will inform you.”
Prior to the elections, Asif registered as a voter in Dhaka-10, having previously been in Cumilla, indicating he may run from that constituency.
According to media reports, both of them had been advised in mid-September by the interim government’s senior leadership to resign but requested additional time.
While Mahfuj expressed willingness to stay until the end of the government, the council ultimately agreed that their tenure should end once the schedule was announced, it added.
The interim government was formed on Aug 8 under Muhammad Yunus, following the student-led mass uprising on Aug 5, 2024 that toppled the Awami League government.
Student representatives were included as advisors: Nahid Islam initially put in charge of information and broadcasting, Asif was reassigned from labour to local government and youth and sports. Mahfuj later assumed the role for information and broadcasting after Nahid resigned to lead the National Citizen Party.
