Bangladesh national football team player Rahmat Mia has been accused of allegedly assaulting his wife, mother-in-law, and relatives.
The incident occurred on Friday evening at his home in Magura, said Mohammadpur Police chief Md Ashrafuzzaman.
Rahmat's wife, Sadia Islam, 21, and her mother, Afroza Begum, 52, are receiving treatment at Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex.
Rahmat was among seven players dropped from the Bangladesh national football team's preliminary squad before the match against San Marino.
Citing relatives, police said Rahmat and Sadia had an arranged marriage in 2022, and welcomed a daughter in February 2024.
Sadia alleged that while she was pregnant, Rahmat had began an extra-marital relationship with another woman and married her in 2025 without Sadia’s consent.
Since then, she had been subjected to mental and physical abuse.
According to Sadia, after a year of separation, Rahmat asked her to meet him on the Madhumati Bridge in Mohammadpur on Friday afternoon.
After meeting her there, he allegedly took their daughter from her arms and returned to his family home.
Sadia said she later went to Rahmat's house with her mother, aunt, and local Union Parishad Member Irani Begum to bring back the child.
Upon arrival, they were allegedly assaulted.
Police rescued them after being informed of the incident.
Ashrafuzzaman said preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from a family dispute.
"So far, we have received a verbal complaint. If a written complaint is filed, we will investigate and take legal action accordingly," he said.
Attempts to contact Rahmat for comment were unsuccessful.
