A passenger boat has capsized in the Jamuna River in the Dhunat Upazila of Bogura after a storm. Nine women have been rescued alive, while one still remains missing.
The incident took place in the Baniajan Spar area of Bhandarbari union of the Upazila around 11am on Thursday, said Dhunat Upazila executive officer (UNO) Arif Ullah Nizami.
The missing, Anguri Begum, 40, hailed from Gosaibari village.
Belal Hossain Babu, chairman of the Bhandarbari union council, said that 10 female workers had gone to Shanbandha Char by boat to work in a corn field. When it started raining, they set off to return home. On the way, a sudden storm hit near Baniajan Spar and the boat sank.
Local resident Jewel Babu said that on his way back to his boat after collecting grass, he saw some women floating in the river. He quickly rescued them by picking them up in his boat.
UNO Nizami said, "Administration personnel reached the spot after the incident was reported. Nine people were rescued, but Anguri Begum went missing. An operation is under way to rescue her. A diving team has also been informed."
