A man has been stabbed to death in Gazipur just days after the murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin rocked the district.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident that occurred around 3am on Saturday in Sreepur’s Maona Chowrasta, according to local police.
The victim, identified by his first name as Jewel, 25, was reportedly from Mymensingh's Haluaghat.
Police also recovered the murder weapon -- a bloodstained knife -- from the scene. The arrestees were identified by single names as Rakib, 25, and Robin, 27.
Citing the accounts of the suspects and witnesses, Sreepur Police Station chief Mohammed Abdul Barik said that on Friday night, several men went to sleep next to a makeshift tea stall under the Maona flyover. An argument reportedly broke out between the victim and the suspects over sleeping arrangements on a jute mat.
“When a scuffle began between them, Rakib stabbed Jewel in the chest with a knife he was carrying. When Robin tried to protect Rakib, his hand was also cut,” Barik said.
Local residents rescued Jewel and took him to a hospital in Maona Chowrasta. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Barik added that police on patrol in Maona Chowrasta arrested the two suspects after receiving the news. Both Jewel and the arrestees were homeless and involved in various crimes centred around the Maona Chowrasta area.
Efforts are under way to confirm their full identities, and further legal action is in the process, according to the police.
