A security guard in Pallabi slit the throats of his two young sons and then attempted to take his own life, reportedly driven by poverty, ongoing family conflict, and his inability to meet his children’s demands.
The incident occurred about a year and a half ago in the Baigartek area of Pallabi. While the father, Ahad, survived, both of his children died.
Following the gruesome incident, Ahad's wife Rozina Begum—who works as a cook in various mess facilities—filed a case against her husband at Pallabi Police Station. Police later arrested Ahad.
After losing her two children at the hands of her husband and her father a few months later, Rozina has been left devastated. She now waits for justice.
Rozina told bdnews24.com, “I had two children. If I had done anything wrong, he could have killed me. Instead, he took away my innocent children from me. A husband can never be greater than one’s children. I want justice. I want the maximum punishment. Nothing else.”
According to court proceedings, the chargesheet submitted by police in connection with the Nov 16, 2024 killings was accepted on Oct 7, 2025 by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam. As the case became ready for trial, it was forwarded to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court.
On Oct 30 of the same year, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate ordered the case to be transferred to the Metropolitan Sessions Court. Later, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz set Mar 1 of this year for a hearing on charge framing and sent the case to the Family Appeal Court-2 presided over by Judge Rukun Uddin. However, Ahad, who remains in custody, was not produced in court on that date.
The next hearing on charge framing is scheduled for Apr 5, confirmed bench assistant Jamal Hossain.
According to the chargesheet, investigating officer Inspector Abul Kaiyum of Pallabi Police Station said Ahad lived with his family in a rented house owned by Nasir Uddin near Bepari Market in Baigartek. He worked as a security guard at the Green Haven building in Manikdi, while his wife worked as a cook in a shared accommodation owned by contractor Jamidul in Baigartek Pukurpar.
“Ahad’s income was insufficient to support the family. He frequently failed to meet the demands of his two sons, which led to ongoing family disputes. Feeling overwhelmed by failure and frustration, he became mentally distressed. During interrogation at the jail gate, he said he decided to kill his children and then commit suicide,” the officer said.
Police said that on the morning of Nov 16, 2024, Ahad insisted that Rozina go to work despite her illness. He even sent her mother along with her. At home were Rozina’s father and their two children.
“Around 10:30am, Rozina learnt that her husband had slaughtered their two sons with a sharp knife. When she returned home, she found their bodies with slit throats. Her father told her that Ahad attempted suicide by slashing his own throat after killing the children,” the officer added.
Locals rushed them to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared both children dead.
Recalling the day of the incident, Rozina said: "He returned home around 6am after work. Around 8:30am, he forced me to go to work. I didn’t want to go because I was sick. He said if I didn’t go, 25 people at the shared accommodation wouldn’t get food. He sent my mother with me because of my illness.”
“I never imagined he would do something like this. I came to know about it an hour later when people informed me.”
Rozina also recalled her father, Jubel Ali, who had come to visit just three days before the incident.
“My father was in the next room when it happened. He was deeply distressed after the incident. Five months later, he also passed away. All this happened because of him [Ahad]. I want justice.”
She now lives in Dhaka with her son from a previous marriage and has gone to her village home for Eid.
Ahad’s lawyer, Mohammad Ismail Hossain, said he was not currently aware of the case details.
