An “extramarital affair” between the wife of an expatriate worker, cattle trader Abdul Latif, and his brother-in-law led to the murder, police say.

Police have arrested four people over the killing. Latif’s body, with its hands and feet bound, was found in the Fuljor River in Sirajganj’s Raiganj on Nov 12.

The arrestees confessed at the court on Tuesday that the “extramarital affair” was the motive for the murder.

Sirajganj Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Shahriar Shahid Bappi recorded their statements on Tuesday, said DB Police SI Nazmul Haque, the investigation officer of the case.

The arrestees are Masud Rana, 40, from Char Faridpur village, Faridul Islam, 42, from the same village, Shahinur Khatun, 40, the wife of expatriate Matiur Rahman, and the deceased’s brother-in-law Rafiqul Islam, 40, from Dostapara in Raiganj Upazila.

The deceased, 40-year-old Latif, was from Char Faridpur village. The cattle trader went missing on Nov 9. Later, police recovered his body from the Fuljor River on Nov 12.

Nazmul, the investigating officer of the case, said that Sirajganj DB Police started an investigation after a case was filed over Latif’s murder.

Police then allegedly used information technology to identify the perpetrators in the “mystery”. Four people were arrested within a short period of time on Monday evening.

The arrestees were presented to the court on Tuesday, and they gave statements under Section 164. Later, in the evening, they were sent to jail custody.

Citing the arrestees’ confessions, SI Nazmul said: “Shahinur, the wife of an expatriate and Abdul Latif were neighbours. Two years ago, they got into an extramarital affair.”

“While they were in the relationship, Latif borrowed Tk 200,000 from Shahinur. However, when (Shahinur) wanted her money back, their relationship deteriorated.”

He said, “Under the circumstances, Shahinur developed an illicit relationship with Rafiqul, Latif’s brother-in-law. Then the two of them planned to kill Latif and hired five people to do so, paying Tk 200,000 for the killing.”

Describing the night of incident while citing the arrestees, SI Nazmul said: "On that night, Shahinur called Latif on his mobile phone and asked him to meet her at the riverbank. When they met, the others (hired killers) hiding there strangled him with a piece of cloth and killed him."

“Latif 's body was then thrown into the river with bricks tied to it.”

Nazmul said police have received information that a total of seven people were involved in the killing of Latif. They are trying to arrest the three absconding suspects.
