Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief advisor, has said the condition of the 8-year-old who was “raped” in Magura has further deteriorated.
“I regret to inform you that her physical condition has worsened further,” Alam said during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday.
“Her CGS coma level has dropped from four to three. The expansion of the brain stem and pupil has decreased compared with [Tuesday].”
The child remains under intensive care at the Pediatric ICU of the Combined Military Hospital, or CMH, in Dhaka.
“CMH doctors are trying their best. Let us all pray together that the child recovers completely,” Alam added.
On Monday, medical officials had indicated a slight improvement in her condition, stating that her “eyelids had moved after five days”.
At the time, Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, the chief advisor’s deputy press secretary, had noted that the child had moved her eyelids for the first time in five days, a hopeful sign.
“However, due to suffocation, the oxygen supply to her brain was disrupted,” Majumder said.
“There was water in the brain, which could not be removed. The air that was trapped in her chest has been cleared. Doctors are optimistic that her condition will improve in the coming days.”
That optimism, however, has now been replaced by renewed concern following Wednesday’s update.
The family alleged that the child was raped on Mar 6 while visiting her sister's house in Magura. She was first taken to Magura Sadar Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
She was then sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's paediatric intensive care unit for further treatment and was later put on a ventilator on Friday night.
On Saturday, doctors at Dhaka Medical College declared the child's condition to be "critical". Following that, a medical board was set up to oversee her treatment, but she was moved to Dhaka’s CMH in the evening.
On Saturday, the child’s mother filed a rape and attempt-to-murder case against four people at Magura Sadar Police Station.
The accused are the child's brother-in-law Sojib Hossain, 18, his father Hitu Mia, 42, a minor teenager, 17, and their mother Jabeda Begum, 40. All the perpetrators are currently in jail.
