NBR issues warning on fraud rings offering 'jobs for money'

The tax authority says that it has received information about such groups operating in different parts of the country

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has warned the public to be cautious of fraudsters who are collecting money by falsely claiming they can secure jobs in the Income Tax Wing of the organisation.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the first working day after the Eid holidays, the tax authority stated that it had received information that such fraudulent groups were operating in different parts of the country.

The NBR also requested that any information regarding these fraudsters be reported to the relevant Tax Commissioner’s Office or to the NBR’s Public Relations Division.

According to the statement, the NBR has been informed that certain fraud rings in various locations are “attempting to carry out fraudulent activities through fresh schemes” by promising employment in the Income Tax Department.

The statement said, “The main objective of these fraudsters is to deceive candidates by falsely claiming that jobs have been arranged for them in exchange for money, even though those candidates would have obtained the jobs through the normal recruitment process based on their own merit.”

The NBR further explained, “Some candidates who are not selected due to a lack of qualifications may receive refunds from the fraudsters. However, candidates who are selected through the regular recruitment process on the basis of merit may end up losing the money they paid, as the fraudsters will claim credit for securing their employment.”

In the public interest, the press release emphasised that: “The National Board of Revenue assures everyone that complete transparency and accountability are being maintained in the ongoing recruitment process of the Income Tax Department. Qualified candidates will be selected through due legal procedures by a committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Public Administration, the Internal Resources Division, the Public Service Commission, and the Income Tax Department.”

Therefore, anyone who receives information about individuals or groups collecting money under the pretence of securing jobs in the Income Tax Department is requested to inform the relevant Tax Commissioner’s Office or the NBR Public Relations Officer at: Telephone: [phone], Email: [email protected].

The NBR also stated, “Job seekers, guardians, and all concerned persons are requested not to fall victim to such fraudulent schemes.”

The recruitment process for filling different vacant positions in the Income Tax Wing of the NBR is currently under way.
