Police have submitted a final report to the court on the death of Sornomoye Biswas, a graphic designer at the newly-launched online news portal Dhaka Stream, concluding that she took her own life due to grievances with her family.
The final report was submitted after an investigation that lasted nearly six months, probing allegations of workplace harassment that the suicide had brought to the surface, sparking social media furore.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Saiful Islam of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the investigating officer, said a suicide note recovered from the scene provided a clear motive.
"We found a note where she explicitly expressed her hurt and resentment towards her family," Saiful said.
"Since the family has no suspicion or complaints about the death, we found no necessity to pursue any other angles."
Sornomoye’s body was recovered from Dhanmondi’s Popular Hospital on the night of Oct 18 last year.
Following an unnatural death case filed the next day, police submitted the final report on Apr 14.
The police report details a tragic sequence of events at her Sobhanbagh residence.
Sornomoye lived with her elder brother, Sourav Biswas, his wife, and their parents.
On the day of the incident, her parents were at their village home for Durga Puja.
According to the investigation, Sornomoye had already injured her left arm with a blade on the morning of Oct 18, but she managed to hide the wounds until the afternoon, when some relatives visited her residence.
Around 4:30pm, her aunt noticed bloodstains on her clothing and questioned her, leading to Sornomoye locking herself in her room under the pretext of changing clothes.
When she failed to respond to repeated calls from her family, her brother used a spare key to open the door, only to find her hanging from a ceiling fan.
She was rushed to a local hospital and later moved to Popular Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead at 7:45pm.
Police recovered a blood-stained blade, a scarf, and a diary from the room.
In the diary, Sornomoye had written a message.
"My head is full of resentment and many questions for which no one has answers," the note read.
She expressed a feeling of being a "burden" and claimed her mother prioritised her brother over her.
"Mother says to my face, 'I don't think about you... I only worry about my son.' In her world, I was only a responsibility. Everyone’s responsibility," read another part of the message.
The police report noted that all forensic evidence, including the inquest, viscera report, DNA tests, and autopsy, pointed consistently toward suicide.
"The investigating officer conducted both open and secret inquiries. The circumstantial evidence and the victim's own writings lead to the conclusion that she committed suicide out of profound emotional distress," the report said.
