A Dhaka court has rejected a plea to show dismissed army major Sadikul Haque Sadik arrested in a Bashundhara car-burning case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam rejected the plea on Sunday, clearing the way for Sadik’s release as there is no detention order against him in any other case.
His lawyer HM Al-Amin said Sadik had already secured bail from the High Court in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed with Bhatara Police.
“He was then sought to be shown arrested in the car-burning case. But the court rejected that plea. As there is no other case against him, there is no bar to his release,” Al-Amin said.
A military court sentenced Sadik to three months in prison on Oct 29, 2024. He was later shown arrested in the Bhatara case and has remained in jail since.
On Aug 7, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Chand Ali sought to show him arrested in a case over the burning of a private car in Bashundhara on Nov 11, 2025.
The investigator said the probe found Sadik had held a “secret meeting” at KB Convention Hall from Jul 3-8, 2025, while he was still serving in the army.
The meeting allegedly involved leaders and activists of the Awami League, which remains banned from all political activities, and its banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League and was aimed at mobilising supporters, discussing political activities and creating unrest.
Police also alleged that Sadik acted as a chief trainer and coordinator, organising similar secret training sessions and workshops at several locations, including Purbachal, Mirpur DOHS and Uttara.
The investigation also alleged that plans to destabilise the country and facilitate former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s return were discussed and that the car-burning incident was later carried out as part of those plans.
After hearing the police explanation and reading the written submission, the court rejected the plea to show Sadik arrested.
