Two children have been seriously injured in an explosion after they reportedly mistook an abandoned object, believed to be a bomb, for a container while playing with it.

The incident occurred around 3pm on Thursday in Jashore Sadar Upazila, according to Jashore Kotwali Police chief Masum Khan.

The injured children are Rezwan, 7, and Ismail, alias Siam, 4 -- both identified by single names.

Police, quoting family members, said the children had been playing near a pond when they found a container-like object and started playing with it.

The object later exploded with a loud blast, leaving both children critically injured.

Locals rushed them to the 250-bed Jashore General Hospital for treatment.

Emergency department physician Rahul Dev Ghosh said the children were in serious condition and had been referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
