Police have arrested controversial rice trader Abdur Rashid on charges of embezzlement.

The arrest was made at 6pm on Tuesday in the Bottoil area, the Kushtia Model Police Station said.

Rashid, who was out on bail, is accused of fraud and intimidation in a case filed by Tofael Hossain, assistant general manager of Akij Essential Limited.

The trader owns a rice mill and serves as president of the Bangladesh Auto Major and Husking Mills Owners Association.

He also holds stakes in several companies.

He has multiple cases lodged against him in different police stations for several allegations, and has been arrested previously.

According to the latest case statement, between Jun 26 and August this year, Rashid entered into an agreement to supply raw materials with Akij Essentials Limited, a subsidiary of the industrial group Akij Limited.

He allegedly violated the terms and fraudulently embezzled Tk 5.07 million in advance.

Rashid is also accused of threatening Tofael with abduction and murder when payment was demanded.

Citing the case dossier, Kushtia Police chief Mosharaf Hossain said, “As a rice mill owner and head of the owners’ association, he is using his position to intimidate people. Numerous cases have been filed against him for repeated fraud and embezzlement.”

The officer added that 19 arrest warrants are still active against him at the station, with numerous other cases in different police stations across the country for fraud, defaulted loans, and bounced cheques.

“Being the owner of such a large company, he has invested thousands of crores through bank financing. Police will investigate where the money went,” he said.
