Rail communication between Dhaka and the northern districts has been restored nearly seven hours after a Panchagarh Express train derailed in Pabna’s Bhangura.

Authorities have formed a four-strong committee to investigate the incident, which occurred on Monday morning.

Bangladesh Railway Pakshi Divisional Engineer-2 Najib Kaiser said train services resumed around 10:45am, after the damaged carriages and engine were removed from the tracks.

The derailment occurred around 4am, when eight wheels from two coaches, including the engine, left the rails near Bhangura Railway Station.

However, no casualties were reported.

Shafiqul Islam, chief of Bhangura Police Station, said police were deployed to ensure the safety of passengers and their belongings.

Pakshi Divisional Railway Transport Officer Hasina Khatun said the Panchagarh-bound train had departed Dhaka at 11:30pm on Sunday. As it approached Bhangura early Monday, the locomotive and two coaches derailed with a loud crash.

A relief train from the Ishurdi Diesel Locomotive Factory arrived at the scene around 7am to begin recovery operations, Kaiser said. By 11am, the tracks were cleared and traffic on the route returned to normal.

Pakshi Divisional Railway Manager Liaqat Sharif Khan confirmed that a four-member investigation committee was formed, led by Divisional Railway Mechanical Engineer (Loco) Moyen Uddin Sardar.

The committee has been asked to submit its findings within three working days.

The other members of the committee are Hasina Khatun, Najib Kaiser, and Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer MM Rajib Billah.

Liaqat added that the derailment caused significant delays, leaving several intercity and local trains stranded at several stations between Dhaka and Rajshahi or the northern region.

“We express our regret for the temporary inconvenience faced by passengers,” he said.
