A man has been beaten to death by a “mob” on suspicion of theft in Narsindi’s Shibpur Upazila.

The incident took place around midnight on Friday outside the Upazila health complex at Monowar Hossain Rana’s pharmacy, said Shibpur Police chief Afzal Hossain.

The victim, Saiful Islam, 30, was from Vitichinadi village.

Police and witnesses said Saiful broke into the pharmacy around midnight by cutting the shop’s lock. Passers-by heard noises inside and called the shop owner to alert him.

On arrival, the shop owner raised the alarm. Local residents then caught Saiful and beat him severely.

He was first taken to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.

Saiful died at the hospital around 10:30am on Saturday while receiving treatment, officer Afzal said.

He added that the body has been kept at the morgue for postmortem examination. Police will take action after receiving a written complaint.
