A tree trader has allegedly been killed in an attack following a conflict between teenage boys over “gambling group and drugs” in Noakhali Sadar Upazila.
The incident took place on Saturday night in the Ramballabhpur area of Dadpur Union, said Inspector (Operations) Ram Chandra Bhattacharya of Sudharam Model Police Station.
The deceased, Md Kamal Uddin, 50, was the son of the late Md Solaiman of the Lacey Sardar family.
Villagers said that an argument and, subsequently, a fight broke out between teenagers from the Minu Majhi family and Lacey Sardar family around 9pm on Saturday over “gambling and yaba consumption” nearby.
At one point, members of Lacey Sardar family detained some members of Minu Majhi family. Later, when people from the Minu family tried to free them, a clash broke out between the two sides.
Kamal Uddin lost consciousness after being beaten by teenagers from the Minu family. Later, he was taken to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
Police arrived at the scene when the incident was reported, Inspector Ram Chandra said. The body has been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem.
Police will take necessary legal action following an investigation based on the complaint filed by the deceased’s family, he said.
