US Representative Grace Meng has congratulated Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the people of the country following the recent general election.

In a statement issued from Washington, DC on Feb 24, the New York Democrat said she extended her “congratulations to [Tarique] and the people of Bangladesh on their recent elections”.

Meng, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs, said many Bangladeshis in her district and across the US followed the elections closely.

“They did so with great hope for democracy, economic prosperity, human rights and the country’s future,” she said.

Tarique was recently sworn in as prime minister after his party secured a landslide victory in the Feb 12 national polls.

Meng said she looked forward to continuing efforts to strengthen relations between the US and Bangladesh.

“I look forward to continuing to work to strengthen the US-Bangladesh relationship and support members of the Bangladeshi community in my district,” she added.
