Five handed death penalty over Keraniganj road robbery killing

Five others walk free as charges fail to hold in court

A Dhaka court has sentenced five robbers to death over the killing of an autorickshaw driver in Keraniganj following a robbery around six years ago.

ABM Ashfaq-Ul-Haque of the Dhaka Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The convicts are gang leader Sohel alias Jewel, Shahin Hawlader, Sumon alias Al Amin, Kabir, and Ferdous alias Barek.

Additional public prosecutor Md Abu Selim Chowdhury said each of the convicts has also been fined Tk 10,000.

Before the verdict, Shahin and Ferdous were brought to court from jail. They were sent back to prison after the judgment.

The other three convicts remain absconding, and arrest warrants have been issued against them.

Five other suspects -- Oli Ahmed, Shah Jahan Munshi, Hasan Hawlader, Jahangir and Kabir, both identified with a single names -- have been acquitted as the charges against them were not proven.
