Chattogram airport security has seized about 1.5 kg of gold, including gold paste and jewellery concealed inside a passenger's underwear.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the passenger, identified as 33-year-old Mohammad Tusar, arrived at Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dubai on Monday.
He was placed under surveillance based on intelligence information.
After the aircraft landed, the CIID coordinated a joint operation with officials from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Chattogram Customs House.
During a body search in the customs hall, officers recovered about 1,400g of 24-carat gold paste, including its packing material, and about 100g of gold jewellery, including five bangles, hidden inside the passenger's underwear, the agency said.
The total amount of seized gold was about 1,500g, with an estimated market value of Tk 30 million, according to the CIID.
Authorities also seized the passenger's passport, a smartphone and his boarding pass.
Preliminary investigations suggest the gold had been converted into paste and concealed in an attempt to evade airport security and smuggle it into the country, the agency said.
CIID said legal action was being taken under the Customs Act, the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, the Import and Export Control Act, the Import Policy Order, Bangladesh Bank regulations and the Special Powers Act.
The agency said it had intensified intelligence surveillance at international airports to prevent the smuggling of gold and other contraband items and would continue such operations.
