The Election Commission (EC) has urged the public to pay no attention to “rumours” that the parliamentary election is being suspended.

The request was made in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Ruhul Amin Mollick, director of the EC’s public relations wing.

It said, “Recently, it has been observed that some people on social media are spreading misinformation about the postponement of the upcoming referendum and national elections.

“The Bangladesh Election Commission has stated in this regard that the national elections and referendum will be held in 299 parliamentary constituencies (excluding Sherpur-3) on the 12th of February.”

The election for the Sherpur-3 (Sreebordi-Jhenaigati) constituency has been postponed due to the death of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nuruzzaman Badol ahead of the polls.
