A torchlight procession has been held at Dhaka University (DU) demanding the trial for Shahriar Alam Shammo’s murder, the resignation of the vice-chancellor (VC) and proctor, and a safe campus.
The procession was held by a student platform named “Students Against Terrorism”, composed of members of a leftist student organisation and the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders.
The rally started from DU’s Hakim Chottor around 7:30pm on Saturday and passed through the Faculty of Arts, Hall area, and the Registrar’s Building before ending at the VC Square.
Abidur Rahman Mishu, the literary and publishing secretary of the Surja Sen Hall JCD unit, said: “Even after 11 days, the killer is still at large. Three suspects have been arrested but they were not brought forward.
“After Shammo’s murder, this administration has taken multiple steps to show off but failed to provide any answer regarding the trial.”
Shammo was stabbed at Suhrawardy Udyan around 11pm on May 13. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
On Wednesday morning, his older brother Shariful Alam filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 10 to 12 people.
So far, six people have been arrested and remanded in the case.
The DU administration said in a statement on Saturday it has urged the speedy disposal of the trial of Shammo’s murder.
It also said DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan spoke to senior officials of law-enforcing agencies.
Police said important information has been obtained from the arrestees and are currently being analysed.
The accused have been placed on a three-day remand to get more clarity on certain issues.
Authorities said the motive behind the murder will be revealed soon, and the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
Shammo was a student of the 2018-19 academic year at the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University. He was also the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of the BNP's student front. He hailed from Sirajganj’s Belkuchi.
