Another case has been filed against 282 Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists for allegedly obstructing a rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj by blocking the highway in Tungipara, causing traffic disruption and creating panic among members of the public.
Up to 200 unidentified individuals have also been named as suspects.
SI Monir Hossain of Tungipara Police Station filed the case under the Special Powers Act on Tuesday night, according to the station's chief Khorshed Alam.
Among the suspects, identities of several have been confirmed.
They are Nurul Islam, president of Tungipara Municipality Jubo League, Ifti Zaman Pallab, vice president of the Municipality Chhatra League, Kabul Hasan Ripon, joint general secretary of Tungipara Upazila Chhatra League, Shahin Biswas Kalu, its organising secretary, Zakir Molla, president of Kushli Union Chhatra League, Mehedi Talukdar, president of Dumuria Union Chhatra League and its General Secretary Momin Mortuza, and Roman Molla, president of Borni Union Chhatra League.
The case alleges that on Jul 16, in an attempt to thwart NCP’s rally in Gopalganj, Jubo League and Chhatra League supporters blocked the Tungipara (Pirojpur-Dhaka) highway, burnt tyres to obstruct vehicle movement, and caused panic among the public while marching in support of the Awami League.
They also attempted to damage government properties around the highway, it added.
OC Khorshed said, “Since the 16th of July, a total of 29 people, including 23 named in the cases tied to the incident, have been arrested in Tungipara. They have been sent to jail by the court. “However, no one was newly arrested in the case filed on Tuesday night.”
Police operations will continue with the consideration that no innocent person is harassed, he added.
