The High Court has granted bail to former Habiganj-4 MP Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in an attempted murder case filed with Chunarughat Police.

A High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Zakir Hossain finalised an earlier issued rule and cleared him for release on Wednesday.

Lawyer M Liton Ahmed argued for the defence, while Deputy Attorney General Md Isa represented the state.

After the hearing, Liton told bdnews24.com that the High Court had granted Suman bail in the attempted murder case filed on Jul 16, 2024, adding that it took 21 months for him to walk free in this case.

Updating on the status of the other cases against the former MP, the lawyer said Suman faces a total of seven cases.

Of these, only the first attempted murder case filed with Mirpur Police has been fully finalised, including at the Appellate Division.

With Wednesday's order added to that, four remaining cases, filed at Khilgaon, Mugda, Adabor and other police stations, are still awaiting rule hearings at the High Court, Liton added.

The lawyer also shared his personal view that media coverage of bail orders sometimes influences subsequent proceedings before the Appellate Division or the trial process, potentially delaying a suspect's release.

On Apr 7, a Habiganj court refused to grant Suman bail in the case linked to an attack during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

After he was produced before Habiganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Kamrul Islam, the judge rejected his bail petition and ordered him to jail.

According to the case documents, students were attacked at the Shayestaganj New Bridge roundabout in Chunarughat Upazila during the 2024 movement.

A case was filed on Sept 11 that year, naming Suman and 97 others as suspects, along with another 200 unidentified people.

Suman was arrested in Dhaka around 1:30am on Oct 21, 2024, in connection with an attempted murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station.
